I like the github approach.
try out new domain model Milestone
groups userstories (or epics in general) to a bigger improvement (e.g. Authentication, Authorization, Design Overhaul, etc. ) and maybe strictly related to major version update like 1.0.0 ---> 2.0.0
a Milestone then is developed as usual in one or more Sprints
