Briefly: the latest version should handle wipe 100% locally. Unfortunately, this means, like in the case of Derek's phone which syncs to Picasa, photos come back (you can actually see Cool Iris calling them down from the cloud.) But, fortunately, you can see that the data on the SD card does get wiped for good.
I will investigate disabling the cloud service sync over the weekend. I want to defeat it eventually, but it appears to be an edge case.
