Allow disabling checkver with a simple variable

Time and time again, I see PRs in the past where checkver was removed due to some breakages causing issues when checkver has to be added again

To disable checkver or autoupdate temporarily, maybe we should create a variable in the JSON?

something like
checkver/autoupdate: {
disabled: true
}
