Hi @ToastHawaii, yes this is true : I like to grab "free" fruits on trees. In my city (Grenoble, France) there are many trees in park and in nature. It can be really great if you can add a category "Fruits" or something like that.
I agree, showing free etable fruits(, berries, nuts and herb) from OSM would be great.
Inspired by https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_CircularEconomy I've looked at it before, there are several things that hold me back to start working on them:
The alternative solutions: At the current time we have with falling fruit and mundraub.org good solutions, the have made a great work and have a lot of useful locations
The OSM data: At the moment the data in OSM are not prepared for showing places you can take free fruits, there is no clear tag for that, maybe the access tag could be use for that but that is not documented yet and it is used seldom in combination
The OSM documentation: We have a documentation for trees but not for berries, nuts and herbs, showing berries, nuts and herbs aren’t was you proposed, but I would like that. :)
I think the documentation must be updated, with things like owner, who is allowed to gather fruit, harvest time, care time (It is free but the trees may also need care, such as cutting) ;) .
Knowledge: Which ones can be eaten, what is the regulation of who gets to pick what and when.
A lot of work and maybe it deserves it own project/website. At the moment I do not have the time to implement all this. :(
But I would like to leave this proposal open.
I have added falling fruit as an external resource link in the infos e.g. “Health” - “Food sharing” ;)

I think you will need to focus on the "genus" : https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/genus#values
More complex, you can also give a look to "species" : https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/species#values
Ok maybe, it will be hard to implement. But i know some project allready listing "fruit" trees.
http://fallingfruit.org/
A lot of fruits genus & species are listed there.
Have a nice day
