People use custom status messages to tell others in the organization what they're working on. Slack seems like the most familiar model for this.

Here's what I'm thinking along with some questions about scope:

For custom status message:

  1. Add, edit and remove a custom status message

    1. Choose an emoji (one will be set by default)
    2. Type a status (likely limit the number of characters)
  2. Display custom statuses as emoji icon with a tooltips

    1. In sidebar
      1. For you (Account bottom left)
      2. For others (DM lists)
    2. Individual messages inside chats
      1. Emoji next to usernames, with tooltip
    3. On 2 person DMs
      1. At the top of the DM for the other person
    4. On profiles
      1. Yours and others
  3. Should this scope include

    1. Setting a time limit for status to expire?
    2. Recent status suggestions when setting a status?
    3. Default status suggestions?

@jgaylor this looks good to me and I don't think we need to do any of the things in #3 to start.

Let's try:

  1. A version with "custom status", "recents", and "defaults"
  2. A version with with just defaults and no custom or recent.

Custom status: Here’s a quick overview Loom (to frame the Figma a little bit) and the latest Figma.

Another piece of custom status is prompting the user to update their status when they're back: https://www.figma.com/design/frxdNd42wV8kgXoiBExoqR/User-and-network-status?node-id=716-24251&node-type=canvas&t=2vRd0D6q7g50d2nJ-0

This can be broken out into a separate issue in the future.

I think this is sufficiently explored, and that when it comes time to develop it we can decide which part to tackle first.

@holmesworcester This was in Design Finishing. There's nothing to finish on the design until we choose a direction. I guess if we're no longer making progress on this it makes sense to go back to the design backlog.
