The Barker proposal implementation allows the distribution for the auxiliary variables (noise) to be varied from its default of standard normal by setting the sample_auxiliary argument accordingly. Using a bimodal distribution for the noise can often be more performant in high dimensional settings. We should ideally make it clearer how to change the auxiliary variable distribution and provide an example of using a bimodal distribution.
