Bluetooth headset microphone will not work (multiple headsets tested)

A paired set of bluetooth headphones will function for audio output, but even when selected in the Sound control panel the microphone does not function.

Computer: M1 Max Macbook Pro (2021 16")
Headsets: Apple Airpods (Lightning charge model), Apple Airpods Max (USB-C charge model)

All combinations of settings in the control panel and in Google Meet for input/output were tested, with no success, multiple times.

If there is specific data that will help please let me know. This is reproducible at will.
