http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1637019/how-to-get-the-jquery-ajax-error-response-text gives a hint at how this can be done with jQuery at least

Okay ^that didn't work... I'm actually not sure if this is possible for security reasons.... might have to manually pass back and check for error :/

Interesting, in DEBUG mode for Flask the error messages are passed back along with the response. DEBUG mode isn't technically safe for production use though... Will probably need to define a 500 handler in Flask that passes back some of the logger's log.
