Overall this seems reasonable and thanks for working on it! However, during review it was suggested that we might not need :closed as it's redundant with :not(:open) and inconsistent with :popover-open. It would be good to go over that concern with the CSS WG.

:closed was resolved to be removed for now, so I'm removing it from this proposal: w3c/csswg-drafts#11039 (comment)

Thanks for updating it! I haven't yet looked at the changeset in detail again, but based on the productive discussion in the CSS/WHATWG Task Force I suggest we mark this as "position: support" one week from now.
