An existing feature does not function as intended
Description
#56481 changed the description of the 'Document settings' section in the Preferences modal from:
'Choose what displays in the panel.'
to:
'Select what settings are shown in the document panel.'
Screenshot:
The problem with this is there's no other occurrence of the 'document panel' terminology in the user interface anywhere. No occurrences in the entire codebase, with the only exception of two occurrences in the
changelog.txt
file.As a user, I have no clue what the 'document panel' is and where to find it. To me, this is a clear usability and user experience issue that needs to be addressed:
For clarity: I'm not opposed to the introduction of the 'Document' concept but, if we introduce such a concept, we should use it consistently and name things accordingly.
It is also worth reminding that the labeling of the first tab in the Settings panel is contextual. For post types, it takes the post type
singular_name
label. if for any reason thesingular_name
label is not provided it fallbacks to 'Document' and when editing a template it changes to 'Template'. Screenshots:Also worth reminding that a few years ago this tab was simply labeled 'Document'. See for example the screenshot on this issue from 5 years ago: #8079
