Alliance for Open Media

  • rav1e: The fastest and worstest AV1 compressor
  • it's truly free
  • based on vp9
  • more space efficient (uses ~25% less bandwidth than vp9)
  • 200 times slower than vp9! but will be optimized, and available in hardware implementations
  • has code for handling computer screen sharing (palette mode, etc)

According to AV1 Codec Update Video Presentation, PDF version, the AV1 codec is currently more than 2500 times slower than VP9.

ffmpeg 4.0 uses mozilla aom, and the faster rav1e does ~5 fps encoding @ 480p (see issue #124) (ouch!)
