Rittika's idea

I want to write about gerontechnology & gerontological design. The guidelines will help to accommodate aging browsers with limited vision, hearing loss & dexterity issues altogether. We often notice our grandparents struggling to use smartphones. Gerontechnology refers to digital tools that are specially designed for elderly users, the term itself is a portmanteau of gerontology and technology. The research focuses on serving older adults within the age group of 60 to 75 years old, who lack digital literacy skills.

Outline

In 2015 according to Pew Research Center, 11% of older adults do not feel confident when using modern electronics. The objective of this article is to promote digital literacy, bridge the digital divide, and empower as well as build confidence among older adults and elderly netizens. This research will provide insights and factual data and introduce strategies to improve human-centred design services specific to the older population intended to help them in the process of embracing modern technology. readers will be gaining insights on ways to implement WCAG 2.1 in their design to accommodate digital citizens with special needs. This research will provide insights and factual data and introduce strategies to improve human-centred design services specific to the older population intended to help them in the process of embracing modern technology.

Hi Rittika, great idea. I have a few friends in their 80s and would love to know more about this subject.

Looking at our Post categories, is this more of a "Experiences" post describing the experience of elderly netizens? Or is this a "How-to" post? What might help me is an outline in a bulleted list format as opposed to an abstract style summary to see where you're going with this.

Thanks

Hi @davatron5000,
We often observe our grandparents struggling to use mobile phones & computers because of digital illiteracy.
My article will be a - 'How-to' guide -

  • To use digital mediums (Mobile or Desktop) for elderly users
  • Instructional Handbook - what designers can do to accommodate elderly digital citizens' needs eg. implementing WCAG 2.1 in their designs.
  • Section on accommodating older adults with weaker eyesight eg. using 14 pt & above text, AA/AAA colour contrast, alt-text images etc.
  • Section on accommodating older adults with hearing loss eg. providing subtitles etc.
  • Section on accommodating older adults with dexterity issues - Fat finger errors, focused states for keyboard users etc.
  • Final chapter - How older Adults can customize the Accessibility Features in their mobile phones. Many are unaware of such features.

Let me know your thoughts. Thank you very much for your time.
Best, Rittika
