Safari 5.?: Compose area loses focus after de/rendering

(Safari 5.1.9 on OS X 10.6.8)

After rendering or unrendering, the email compose area loses focus. This makes it very annoying to flip back and forth, since you have to click into the compose area again for it to work.

Note that this is a pretty old version of Safari on a pretty old version of OS X (7.0 on 10.9 is coming soon), and I might never actually fix this.
