Describe the bug
Pinned items aren't showing even though the setting for pinned items is on. I've just reinstalled because it didn't work and i've thought that maybe i've messed it up.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Enable pinned (which is on by default when installing and should show up)
  2. Not showing.

Expected behavior
The pinned items would show

Desktop (please complete the following information):

  • Window 11 Version: [e.g. 23H2]
  • Fluent Search Version: 1.0.0.85
  • Installation source: github

Additional context
I've tried Fluent Search at work just to see if i could fix issues i had at home for days like this one with the pinned items, but i have downloaded it from Windows store which has 0.9.92.998 version. I didn't realise it at first, but when seeing the pre-1 versions release, i thought to me that I must have an older version installed at home because in that 0.9, everything workes, was so simple to use. I then came home and i was like "ok lemme update to 0.9", my face dropped when i saw i'm on a newer version because everything is so hard compared to 0.9. Like, why do i have a million tags from sites i don't use that you cannot remove? I want to be able to delete tags freely. Why doesn't my pinned items are not showing? And the worst, it took me 5 seconds to prioritize exe results on 0.9 while i cannot do it on 1.0 even though i'm trying for days already. The priority sistem in 0.9 blew me away, it was soo good compared to this one. I'm struggling for days to set it up correctly while on 0.9 i did it in 20 mins.

The home screen behavior has been changed in 1.0.x versions.
To see the home screen you can do any of the following -

  1. Press down key when the search bar is empty
  2. Double click the search bar when it's empty

To always show the home screen go to Settings -> Personalization -> Window style -> Always open the search bar (this will always show results as well).

Image

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any additional questions.

Why is that setting a thing if Show pinned items is already on? Isn't it redundant? Also, how do i delete search tags? This is the most important thing for me

Show pinned items is whether to show pinned results when the home screen is visible.
To ignore search tags go to Settings -> Search tags -> Ignore search tags, and add there any tags you don't want

When i have installed Fluent Search, it auto-created like 200 tags. To search one by one and ignore it's not feasible. Also some tags don't even show up like when i type in search bar "Translate" it shows me google translate with a "translate.google" tag, but in ignore i can only find "Translate" and ignoring that doesn't ignore "translate.google", And "Always open the search bar", the name of this setting doesn't make sense to me, when i press CTRL-ALT it opens the search bar, how can anyone tell it's related to pinned items? Shouldn't it be "Always open pinned & suggestions pane" or something like that?

And how do you prioritize exe files over everything else? I have "A result with content matching .exe will be above any result", but it isn't. I see exe files have .exe search tag, but in prioritization, when you search exe, it doesn't find that tag so i can prioritize it even though i have 200 search tags auto-created. Check the image and the prio rule below, exe should be above the url

If you're talking about the translation plugin, you can just type the language you want to translate to, e.g. type English and press TAB and then it will auto-detect the input language.
To ignore Google Translate tag, it should show as translate with Google Translate icon.

And "Always open the search bar", the name of this setting doesn't make sense to me, when i press CTRL-ALT it opens the search bar, how can anyone tell it's related to pinned items? Shouldn't it be "Always open pinned & suggestions pane" or something like that?

It's not related to pinned items, it's whether to open the search bar or not. For example, if you search something and then close the search window and then show it again quickly, if you have this setting enabled the search bar will open and you will see previous results.

And how do you prioritize exe files over everything else? I have "A result with content matching .exe will be above any result", but it isn't. About prioritization, can you share your full prioritization rules list? Some prioritization rules may interfere with each other which may cause what you're experiencing.

Browser result from your first screenshot doesn't have retrobat tag?

In general, it's not recommended to make conflicting rules like Exe above any results and retrobat above any results; I am working on improving the UX for that.

Browser result from your first screenshot doesn't have retrobat tag?

It's in the context, and the context contains "retrobat" so yeah, it should show above any result, you are correct,, but then, in combination with the exe prio rule and the browser below anything rule, it should move it below everything, right?

In general, it's not recommended to make conflicting rules like Exe above any results and retrobat above any results; I am working on improving the UX for that.

In 0.9 version, you had it right, there was something like "if context contains, put it above" and i wrote there .exe and the exe was always first.

In 0.9.66, it said "Added support for removing custom search tag, either by pressing right click on them", that's what i actually need to be able to do, ignoring still makes it that tags show up everywhere, if i create 100 tags for one file and then ignore these 100, when i search that file i will have 100 tags showing up in the right-side pane.

Image

Rb which is a custom created tag is ignored in the settings, why does it still show up?

It seems to me that most of the auto-generated tags (200 or so) come from browser and history. I will have to disable those apps in the settings, even though i want to use them, but in the current state, they're creating too many useless tags. It created tags for sites that i have visited 2-3 times years ago, which is purely clutter. It is not a good choice to auto-create so many tags for me not even asking me if i want those tags at installation or not let me delete them as i see fit. Ignoring feels like a workaround. I don't want to sound mean, but i keep trying to enjoy this app, but i keep finding me fiddling with settings for days now isntead of using it.

Unfortunately, currently there is no way to define priority between the prioritization rules themselves, so in your case you will mostly likely see inconsistent behavior.
I suggest changing one the Above any result priorities to either be compared to specific result type.

In 0.9 version, you had it right, there was something like "if context contains, put it above" and i wrote there .exe and the exe was always first.

It wasn't exactly like that; it could happen in 0.9.x as well depending on the rules order.

Ok so I may misunderstood you about tags. So, you want to ignore results with these tags? If so you can do that using prioritization rules.

It seems to me that most of the auto-generated tags (200 or so) come from browser and history. I understand, I may need to rethink it. In my perspective tags are something the user shouldn't care if there are too many, and apps should create them as freely as possible. Can you please share why many tags makes it harder for you to use the app beyond the TAG completion? If you can give some examples it will be really helpful.

Just so you know I take feedback very seriously and I will make changes based on it. The 1.0.0.x has been in beta for 1.5~ years and unfortunately, I didn't get enough feedback on it.

So many confusing things. I got over the tags, i get it, no way to delete them. Then i've tried to add a tag to some files and folder. I search for them, click + to add a tag, add it, all good. Then i go into the pinned items and theres some kind of folder in the pinned items that i cannot get rid of? I already had those pinned, i don't need them in a folder. I right click the folder, click unpin and guess what, the folder disappears WITH ALL MY OTHER PINNED ITEMS OUTSIDE THE FOLDER that were pinned before creating that tag! It took me half an hour to add pinned items and a custom tag. Why does it do that? Why is there a folder for a custom created tag on my pinned items tab? Why does all my pinned items disspear when i unpin that folder? They also are removed from that custom tag i've just created. I've lost like 30 mins of work. What you see in the video it happened for tens of items, they get unpinned all at once and also removed from the "bat" tag.

test.mp4

I am now forced to have this on my pinned items:

Image

Because if right click that pinned folder (named Bat) and click Unpin, it will unpin the folder and all other items outside that folder and it will remove "bat" custom tag from all items that are pinned. I had to create the "bat" custom tag for each item 5 or 6 times because it kept disappearing when i unpinned that folder. Why does unpinning that bat folder remove the custom tag from the file?

To recreate: search for a file, add custom tag "test", click icon and click "Pin", go to home screen you will have that file there and a folder with that file inside. Right click the folder and unpin, both the folder and the pin outside the folder disappears. Search the file again, no more "test" custom tag, gone.

Did you also see how yuzu.exe was not prioritized? Even though this is my prio rule, i left only one and it still shows folder at the top.

Image

Google translate is still there even though is ignored, showing up for every search, cluttering my search items. That's why i wanted all those tags removed, they force me to enter another extra letter for example i have a custom tag "BAT" but from my browser i have a tag "BAR" so instead of going B+TAB i have to go BAT+TAB because BAR shows up first for when i want to tab.

Image

Image

It is ignored. Also funny is that the other ignored tag doesn't work as well, still shows up in search

@raclariu thanks for the detailed feedback.
I will explain each behavior, which may be not intuitive, and I will work on it for improvement.

. I right click the folder, click unpin and guess what, the folder disappears WITH ALL MY OTHER PINNED ITEMS OUTSIDE THE FOLDER that were pinned before creating that tag!

Folder in home screen == custom tags, that's why it's called Tag Folder. The items disappearing with folder is a bug, I will fix it.

Did you also see how yuzu.exe was not prioritized? Even though this is my prio rule, i left only one and it still shows folder at the top.

Yes, this is most likely a bug. Does it happen consistently? If so, can you please check if removing the "Files" app matching helps?

Ignored search tags, doesn't mean the result is ignored - it only means the tag won't be suggested.
To ignore results based on prioritization, simply add an Ignored prioritization rule -
Image

Also, specifically for custom web tags you can make the results appear only when searching with tags by enabling Search tag only -

Removed Files matching, it works better now, but yeah, it still looks like a bug because the exe file is a File and the rule should be fine.

As for the others, i will use priority ignore rules as they work somehow better. But it still looks like it works if there's only one tag like "Translate" and no extra tags. Check below in the image with ignore, still shows up. Did i get it wrong?

Image

Also, small bug, if you open search, don't type anything but press Delete on the keyboard, it asks you if you want to delete a file. This doesn't happen all the time, it's strange.

You didn't get it wrong, it's a bug specifically with browser tags. I will fix it.

Ok, so i've managed to get myself into some bugs, it's working better now than when i've started this thread so thanks for that.

Also, is there a way to go into gaming mode via terminal? like fluent-search.exe /gaming-mode, i stream games sometimes and i could use a batch file to to go into gaming mode, not a big deal tho, i have the ram, i'm more concerned about the keybinds. If not, i can use taskkill /f on the process and restore after i stop streaming.

Glad it worked out, I will make sure to fix the issues you discovered in the next update.

That's not possible, but you can search Gaming mode in Fluent Search to enable/disable it; Or you can use the Ignore hotkeys in full screen apps or Ignore hotkeys in processes in Settings -> Hotkeys. These settings enable partial gaming mode as well (it's not documented in settings)
