MySQL won't start on existing box (and manual solution)

Today I got this on a box which was upgraded:

"mysqld failed"

with the result being that MySQL was not available

I ran these commands:

sudo mysql_upgrade
sudo /usr/libexec/mysqld --user=mysql --verbose

and the box is now OK.

It would be nice to include these in the puppet manifest, but for now, if you're getting this problem, you can run those commands and document further problems/ideas here.
