i am asking is this project dead? i am pretty sure it is and if it is you should probably archive this repo
also the license seems to not allow simply using this fork

I wouldn't worry about the crayon license (one collaborator admits how ridiculous it is #18 (comment)). It itself is contradictory, excluding the project from using its own code):

It is also not permitted to be used in any project that contains contributions from either remitamine or dstftw.

Technically, no. licenses don't apply to the owner of the code. But (if the license were enforced), it does prevent any other fork from using this code

But, despite the licence notice in the repo, the maintainers have actually given out all current code under Unlicense yt-dlp/yt-dlp#31 (comment)

Not sure how this is relevant to this post though 🤷

I thought that was if the license said it applied to end users, which this license doesn't.
