Is http also a template type? It seems to exist along-side a steps-type template in https://argoproj.github.io/argo-workflows/http-template/ but I don't know if I'm missing some subtle difference.

yes all of the above are template types. some parts of this page are a bit dated and so don't include all template types.
per this page, steps and DAGs are "template invocators" while the rest are "template definitions" that can exist inside of steps and DAGs.
