Using iTerm2 (the popular terminal alternative), if I select some text, and then three-finger-tap, the selected text is pasted twice at the prompt. One copy of the text is highlighted, the other is not, if that makes a difference. If middle-clicking with an actual mouse, the text is pasted once at the prompt of course, and it is highlighted.
