Compatability advice

We have an extension that also rewrites adminhtml/system_config_form_field. In this case it adds checkboxes so that setup scripts can be easily created. We'd really like our extensions to be compatible as we think our clients would benefit from yours, and as developers we would like to be able to use ours. Any thoughts as to a way to do this that also allows them to work independently?
