Hello, this is my desperate call for help .

I upgraded this morning MyOwnNotes from latest version on f-droid (2.0)
After upgrade all my notes have disappeared !

For the record : I was using MyOwnNotes as a classic "notes app" in local mode only. I was planning (someday) to sync with an Owncloud account.
So I have no fresh backup of this note. (Yes, you can blame me)

What should I do to recover notes ? I already tried to browse my smartphone folders, without success.

Should I try to revert to an old version of MyOwnNotes ?

Thanks for your help !

Well that is ... not good. We tested migrating offline data so I am estranged it did not work on your side. We'll take a look at it.

Before using the phone much more it may be a good idea to backup the whole phone with dd or sth similar. If your device is rooted this should be doable. You need to read out the data as close to the hardware as possible. Reading out all flash sectors may do the trick. I have no idea about android forensics however.

Android forensics anyone?

Thank for your feedback, I'll try to follow you advice, but my phone is not rooted. And it's quite hard to root it, apparently. (it's an "exotic" model)

I already tried to downgrade in 1.6. Fdroid did not let me do that, so I had to delete 2.0 first, then reinstall 1.6.
Unfortunately, no notes after I launched 1.6 version
I feel stupid because every other private data on my phone is synced OTA : contacts, calendar, tasks, emails...
I just waited to much to take care of notes.

One question : what 2.0 does to old 1.6 sql database, and where is it located ?

@Saroumane regarding location of 1.6 db I will relay your question to @steppenhahn .

If you still want to go down the android forensics path, be advised that you should have as little data writes as possible as your lost data may get overridden by succeeding writes.

Btw, I kindly ask you to provide us with detailed device and OS information as something like that should not happen and needs to be looked at thoroughly.

Device : UMI emax mini
OS : Android 5.0.2
Not rooted (I would like to, but it seems complicated or involving unsafe programs)
I don't know if it's relevant, but I have some Google apps disabled :

  • G Account manager
  • G App
  • G Backup transport
  • G Calendar Sync
  • G Contacts Sync
  • G One Time init
  • G Partner set up

Nothing else special.

I was curious so I did this :
1/ I set up an owncloud account, with owncloud official app.
2/ Then I upgraded MyOwnNotes from 1.6 to 2.0 (with only 1 sample note I just made)
3/ I relaunched MyOwnNotes , I saw again the "add account" screen, I added the owncloud account previously set up... and my unsynced sample note was here, ready to be sync.

So I can't reproduce the bug.
And maybe I should have done steps 1/ and 3/ after "losing" my notes. Maybe they were just here, waiting to be revealed. And maybe I just deleted them for real when I uninstalled 2.0.

A lot of "maybe". Only the dev could tell what happens to the notes database, after each step.

Thanks for the info. Hard to say what caused the issue. We will investigate further.
