Roadmap of the "backup" functionality of Olares

Hi there,

I cannot find the "Backup" functionality in the settings of my Olares instance. Searching in Bing/Google shows that the former product Terminus supported it. Could you share the roadmap of introducing/enabling that functionality?

Hi, @nickluchen Thanks for the question.

In the earlier versions of Olares, the backup functionality was similar to “Time Machine” feature, allowing restoration of a cluster to a specific point in time. It was mainly supported by Velero and Restic. However, there were some limitations:

• Only admins could perform cluster-level backups; regular users were unable to back up individually.
• In large clusters, the backup tasks could be quite lengthy since they backed up different time segments of various components within the cluster.
• Cloning the entire cluster without insight into its internal structure led to challenges in scheduling backups, and there was a lack of control over the hardware requirements during the restore process.

Planned roadmap:

Our current road map of backup is implemented in three phases:

1. File-based backup: A more granular approach to backing up specific files or directories. This will be available in 1.12.0 release in March.
2. Application-based backup: This will include backup/restore hooks for third-party applications.
3. User and cluster-level backup: A more comprehensive backup system allowing users to back up based on individual users or clusters.

The ultimate goal is to have a backup solution that provides more control and flexibility. The complete solution will be rolled out in the May release in 2025.

It's great to know that backup is going to be released soon in this year.

It's also appreciated it will be implemented step-by-step: actually, the 'lightweight' file-based backup is what I really want at this moment. Looking forward to the next release. Thanks.
