Capturing some of the feedback / ideas for the 2021 Rising Stars.

General

  • More connection with Best of JS: after the TOP 10 a link “View the category on Best of JS” to show people the full list of projects?
  • More interactivity for each section to let users compare data for each year without having to leave the page in order to go to an other year

Categories

  • A monorepo category?
  • A runtime category?
  • Maybe a more generic "Tooling" category to include build tools, monorepo, etc
  • Maybe we could link to Best of JS for the additional categories not covered?

Thank you very much Benjamin @BBlackwo !

As a reminder, sections in Rising Stars are made of projects from one (usually) or several tags in Best of JS.

Most popular tags: https://bestofjs.org/tags/

Like we said before we could make some sections more generic, the “Build Tools” section could be renamed “Tooling” and include not only the tag “Build” but also “Compiler”, “Linting”, “Monorepo”, “Node.js Version Management”, “Packages”… and why not “Run time”?

But it’s not an easy question as you could consider that “Testing” is also part of the “Tooling”!

To me the goal of Rising Stars is to provide a subset of meaningful information from Best of JS at the cost of missing some projects sometimes that don’t fill the categories, because it’s impossible to make everybody satisfied…

It's also why the list start with the "Overall" category, that does not filter anything based on tags and show up to 50 projects.

The best would be to somehow merge both apps to make more obvious the fact that the Rising Stars are just a "snapshot" at a given time, with emphasis on some “mainstream” categories, enhanced by useful comments of course.

I didn't realise until now that there are 180 different tags! 😱 https://bestofjs.org/tags/

So we only show a very small subset in Rising Stars.

Could I also add an idea?
I think it would be nice to have some kind of subscription mechanism so that every year subscribers would know when the new edition of Rising Stars is ready. Maybe a simple email reminder or something like that?

Hello Marius @bakasmarius
Yes you can, all good ideas as welcome 😄
I used to send a weekly newsletter actually but it was a lot of work and I made a pause.
Benjamin told we could run a Discord server where we could share posts about the trends and announcements like the release of the Rising Stars or news features added to Best of JS.
But I'm not people would join if all they want is a notification about the Rising Stars release.
Or maybe they can can follow me on Twitter since I'm pretty quiet, they would not miss the release of the Rising Stars 😅

Well, I'll give it a try with Twitter, but since I use it quite rarely, it's still kind of a lottery 😄 I guess there are more chances to simply remember Rising Stars each year 😅
