Alternative to hex conversions?

Your work seems to have a pared down set of the functions in mininero, and if it is helpful, please consider taking a look at some of the stuff I've been playing with for removing the extra conversions to and from hex. Instead, it keeps things as int type as much as possible.

I've also made it python3 compatible (although likely not python2).
