Contacts Merge Disaster

Hey, appreciate the efforts in the app. However I am encountering an issue which I need to resolve. Not entirely sure which app is at fault, however It seems like this app.

So it seems that it has created multiple entries for the same contact, some with varying info. I use the stock contact app on GrapheneOS which I believe is the AOSP contacts app.

So for example, I have 1 contact let's say Johnny.
When I scroll through my contacts, I only see Johnny one time as expected. However, when I go into his contact, click edit, it pops up asking me which contact to edit. It lists his name 5 times, and they all say DAVX5 address book.
It seems like 2 of them are duplicates, 1 of them is missing a lot of info the others have, and the other has alternative info as well.

It looks like a large portion of my contacts are like this. Some only have 3 to edit, some have 5, some have just their 1 as they should.

I am not sure how to even resolve this, or go through and pick one, ensure I pick the one with the most info, and remove the others.
I think for a start I will check on my DAV WebMail and see how it shows up there.

But I am not sure why it's doing this. It seems like some sort of merge issue where instead of merging data, it creates a new contact for them.

How many address books do you synchronize in DAVx5? Maybe there are CardDAV address books like "Recent contacts" that contain the same contacts.

On Android other apps that access your contacts often create a copy of it in their own database. Like Whatsapp, Threema or other messenger apps. After that copy the Android system merges the same contacts together into one "visible" contact and you should see the contact once and when you view details you'll see where this contact is also stored.

Whats a bit strange is that you say that a contact is there 3 times and sometimes 5 times.

You can also send us your debug info (davx5.com/support with reference to this discussion) to see how many contacts have been synced in which address book. It is visible only in the DAVx5 debug info not in the UI.

I only sync one address book, it is my personal contacts from my WebDAV server.
I have set the app on my phone to automatically choose DAVX5 for newly created contacts, instead of creating them locally.

Also I am aware other apps such as Signal, would create their own message database. However, as far as I am aware, these show up with their respective app symbol next to the contact area they adjust. Maybe they are not merging right with DAVx5 and instead duplicating everything, and only showing the app symbol next to the new info? Not sure. Like on some of my signal contacts, I see the signal icon next to the number. The number is in there already, and then there is another specifically for signal which makes sense.

However, my issue is, I am having duplicate contact cards. Some of with mixed information. Most look like duplicates, however some of the duplicates either have more or less info (likely from editing in the past).
Everytime I go to "edit" a contact, 99% of the time, it shows multiple of that same contact, and shows the DAVx5 app icon beside each of them. So it is definitely the synced contacts and not from Signal or Whatsapp or anything.

I can send some debug info soon, I noticed it says I have 471 raw contacts which seems absolutely absurd. So it seems like it is duplicating up to that number. Excluding dupes, I don't think I have more then maybe 120 or 150ish.

What server do you use?

Can you try to make a clean sync? Disable the address book, press sync, then all contacts should be removed from the DAVx5 address book. Please check in the contacts app if they are also gone there.

After that enable verbose logging in the DAVx5 app settings. A notification appears. Please enable the address book again and press sync. Wait until it is finished. Check the contacts app again. Does it display correctly (every contact available once)? If not please send us the logs (davx5.com/support with reference to this discussion).

If not please also check with a different phone not running GrapheneOS to see if it works there.

It uses SoGo for DAV.

It does not seem to be sync related. This was originally happening on my previous device, and is now happening on my brand new device. So that does not seem to be an issue. Also the contacts are duplicated on server side as well (so when I pull them into thunderbird, or view them directly in SOGO web, they show duplicated. So I see multiple of many contacts in my contacts list)

I do not have another non GrapheneOS device, besides my laptop and web. The contacts still appear duplicated on Thunderbird, as well as in the SoGo web mail interface. However, if I create contacts on them they do not appear to duplicate from what I have experienced. It just seems like ones added from my phone which use DAVx5. Also again, as I stated it happened on my older device, as well as my brand new device with a fresh install.
