davx5 parameters

(perhaps there is already an answer somewhere on these discussions, but I did not find any)
I run my own CalDAV server on my own machine and domain name.
Calendar users have names and passwords, but the names do not take the syntax of e-mail addresses.
Does DAVx5 require the e-mail syntax for user names, or is there a way around it?
This is important if I want to change to Android, away from iOS.
It all works perfectly on iOS.

User names (as used in Basic/Digest authentication) are not email addresses (although the user name can be an email address). So you can just enter the user name and password in DAVx5.

That's what I thought, and it did accept the username, but then it kept going around and requiring an e-mail addres, saying Google would use that address for something. (I don't remember exactly what, I was using a friend's Android phone).
