It has been brought to my attention that GA has quite a few questionable things around it and has been actually banned in a few EU countries... This poses some problems.

The new choice for analytics is PostHog.

Assuming you want basic tracking, these are some that I know. From these Plausible I've worked with the most:

  • https://plausible.io/ - you can run it without requiring a cookie notice even. paid hosted or self-hosted
  • Simple Analytics (nice but not open source AFAIK) Can be hosted + free if you add a badge in your footer + public dashboard
    with event tracking etc., probably overkill:
  • Matomo (free and open source but complex, must self host to be free)
