provide images for spots just so people recognize it when they are there.

What would speak for collecting and storing images ourselves.

A low threshold way to test this would be to get images from Google maps/earth...

It is possible to link to an available StreetView location, but there also needs to be a check whether that is available. It seems to be quite easy, but would force us to rely on Google APIs, specifically https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/reference?csw=1#StreetViewService.
