Obviously the preseed in this repo is used with QEMU/KVM, not VMWare and I have no experience with VMWare.
However, I wonder whether VMWare is configured to provide the block device as something other than /dev/vda? If you boot your VMWare VM, try lsblk and see what the block device is named. You can then change the preseed to use that device name and it should work.
