Assignment 2 - Data Visualization Designs

Introduction

In the following assignment, we students were required to create a schematic map of a known place.
The place that I have picked is our campus, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

I picked this location because I was a teaching assistant in our degree and am currently pursuing research work under a professor in the HS department. So, I am quite familiar with the campus map.

About me

Name: Pushpak Ruhil
Roll no.: 21F2001180

Actual Map

Below is a snapshot of the actual map of the campus. This has been taken as a reference as well.

Screenshot 2024-06-22 at 6 59 00 PM

Outlining the Roads

Below are the outlines of the roads that I have taken into consideration while creating the schematic map

Screenshot 2024-06-22 at 7 12 44 PM

Schematic Map

Now, let's discuss the Schematic Map drawn for the above location.

Schema_GA2_final

Points to Note

Here are some key points that can be noted down concerning the schematic map

  • The schematic map was first divided into 4 equal quadrants, centred by the Gajendra Circle (GC)
  • Major grounds are denoted with green highlights
  • Major buildings are highlighted with blue boxes filled with a blue highlight
  • A distinct red colour has been used to annotate
  • At the top right, the north direction has been marked with a legend.
  • Any pass-way which is not a direct road has been shown with open road brackets (For example, near IC&SR or any building)
  • Only straight lines have been used in the schematic map: Horizontal, vertical and 45-degree lines

The schematic diagram is hand drawn, using a pen-tabet on an app called GoodNotes

Iconic Bridges of Srinagar

Name: Sheikh Uzair Hussain
Roll No: 21f1001254

I have chosen to create this schematic map of the iconic bridges of Srinagar because it is my hometown, and I am deeply connected to its rich history and culture. The targeted audience for this map includes tourists, history enthusiasts, and locals who wish to explore or rediscover the city's architectural heritage. The design choices for this map were made to highlight both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the city's bridge network. I opted for a blend of traditional and minimalist style with clear, bold lines to represent the bridges and canals, ensuring that the map is easy to read and visually appealing. Each bridge is named to emphasize its historical significance, and the soft, pastel background contrasts with the prominent blue of the river and bridges, drawing the viewer's attention to these crucial landmarks.

I chose serif typefaces (Abril Fatface and Playfair Display) for the map text to evoke a sense of tradition and timelessness, reflecting the historical importance of these structures. The inclusion of a brief descriptive text aims to provide context and entice viewers to explore the architectural marvels of Srinagar, while the compass rose ensures orientation. This map not only serves as a practical guide but also as a tribute to the serene beauty and heritage of Srinagar.

Introduction:

Swami Vivekananda is considered as one of the greatest spiritual leader and social worker of India. He was born in Calcultta (now Kolkata) in 1863. As the assignment, here I have shown the schematic map of the major places where he was born, got learnings and worked in Kolkata. This will serve as a guide map to the tourists who want to visit all the places which were most important to Swamiji's life and can be visited in one day by car.

Mental Map

The River Ganga is considered as reference. There are 2 parallel roads on the eastern and western bank, namely B.T. Road and G.T. Road. The railway lines and nearby rail stations are also considered as major landmarks and influences the road network.

mental_map

Actual map from maps.google.com

The source is Swamiji's House (Vivekananda Road) and final destination is Belur Math. The interim destinations are Ramakrishna Math at Baranagar, Dakshineswar Kali Temple at Dakshineswar.

image

Tracing on the above real map

Tracing is done on the above map. The color for the tracing has been choosen as per Swamiji's attire. Mostly 45-90 tracing has been done. However, due to bend of the river and accordingly, the curves in the road, all the tracing are not purely in 45-90 degrees. An approximation is done near the temple, as the road shown on the map is not really for car driving and the tourists are supposed to walk there. This is known to the people who regularly visits there or stays near by.

map_with_route_and_river

In between prominent locations

Other prominent establishments are shown here, which will help tourist to have mental maps, understand their locations, or use a different transportation if required, or drop or join with other tourists. For this purpose, I have shown Girish Park Metro Station, Shobhabazar Metro Station, Indian Statistical Institute, Ballyghat Rail Station, Belur Rail station and Belur Math Rail Station. Rail/Metro Stations are shown as green triangle, Indian statistical Institute is shown as red circle and the places of visit are shown as red star.

In this schematic view, I have shown the necessary routes, river along with bridge to cross, and icons with label and distances. The team color has been choosen as per Swamiji's attire.

Tourist Guide Map of Nainital, Uttarakhand
I have created a semantic map of Nainital for tourists to help them navigate the famous places in Nainital, Uttarakhand, which is known for its lake and scenic views. This map will make it easy for tourists to visit these places and have a seamless experience.

To create this map, I followed a step-by-step approach, as mentioned below:

Step 1: Select the specific areas and locations that will be required to guide a tourist.
photo_2024-06-25_22-24-12

Reason behind choosing this specific area: I have used this horizontal view and frame because it covers almost all the famous places in Nainital.

Step 2: Mapping paths within the Chosen Map
Untitled (5)

In this map, I have highlighted the main pathways, such as roads, which cover most parts of the city along with the city roads leading to the famous places. it helped me tracking the required elements in the map i,e Roads, lakes and etc.

Step 3: Basic Mental model for the Required Map.
Untitled (4)

Here, using a grid and geometry, I have tried to provide the pathways that are relevant as per the requirement. Given that it is a hilly area and it was a bit difficult to fit the entire map into a 45-90 grid, I did my best to use it wherever possible.

Step 4: Adding elements, icons, and typography according to visual hierarchy.
Untitled (3)

Step 5: Finalizing the map with legends and titles.
Untitled (7)

Thankyou!

DESIGNING SCHEMATIC MAP
In this assignment, we will be looking at a few steps taken to create a schematic map of a known place.

  1. Where, Who, Why?

    • For this assignment, I have chosen the student town of Manipal, Karnataka as I did my undergraduate here. Located very close to the city of Udupi, this
student town is the home of MIT, KMC, and other colleges under MAHE.
    • This schematic map development of Manipal is meant for new students/ freshers who have just arrived from a different state.
    • The reason for making this schematic map is to familiarize the new students with the town of Manipal, providing them with a basic idea of the town's layout, which would help them navigate smoothly.
  2. Mental Model

  • Mental Model is a rough sketch of the layout and routes of the town. Below you can find a rough mental model of the town made using FIGMA.

DESIGNING SCHEMATIC MAP

In this assignment, we are asked to create a schematic map of a known place, following an overall process.

Koramangala Pub Crawl

Scale, Audience, Purpose

  • A part of my locality - Koramangala 5th Block - is well know for its pubs and nightlife
  • It gets many visitors
  • The schematic map provides a quick reference guide to the most popular pubs in the area
  • Visual cues provide the location of the pub and the seating capacity
  • It also gives an idea of the compact nature of the area and the ease of navigation
  • Other useful amenties - coffee shops and eateries - are also marked

Mental Model

Untitled

Base map from OSM

  • Used base layer of OSM as the starting point
  • Use the 'share' feature to save it as an image
  • Posted the image in figma
  • (this approach seemed to work better than screenshot)

image

Pubs lead to a tilt!

  • The locality map is almost North, but not quite
  • Added a North direction to the map
  • Rotated the pictures so that the roads are mostly horizontal

image

Process

  1. Marked off the area and coloured the roads to give a block appearance
  2. Marked the less important roads
  3. Used grey and other shaded polygons to mask other buildings in the picture
  4. Added icons and text for the popular pubs (<50% have been covered!)
  5. Added icons for popular coffee shops and resturants
  6. Named landmarks to provide orientation
  7. Removed the underlying map
  8. Used the icon size to approximately indicate the capacity of the pub/bar
  9. Chose not to use colours to indicate another 'useful' property - Strength of ID scrutiny by the estbalishment!

The online version is available here; https://www.figma.com/design/n5RgRxpF9VvtpWHWaFZ1Wr/KoramangalaPubCrawl?node-id=0-1&t=VtuzCRP0Ei9lp5ze-1

Learnings

  • The assignment ended up being more of an infographic
  • Data Visualization approach would be to add the data to OSM or another mapping tool
  • Data would be - Name of pub, Seating Capacity, Geolocation, Price range, 'Friendliness', etc.

Title: Map of the village of Indpur, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh

The chosen village of Indpur has a population of around 4500 people and majorly suffers from problems in the areas of lack of a sustainable source of income. The idea of the map is to understand the overall presence of multiple types of houses, schools, medical shops, and the presence of multiple types of vegetation, which could prove to be a potential source of income for the villagers. So, a mental model of the whole sketch was first made, and then a relevant map of the whole village with all 8 wards was compared to arrive at the final sketch.

image

The targeted audience for this map includes government officials, NGOs/any other independent bodies who wish to explore/ bring about any developmental plans to the village. The design choices for this map were made to highlight the presence of residential and agricultural land in the village. The whole village was not only present on an inclined terrain but also lacked many basic amenities like drainage and drinking water, and hence, efforts were made to ensure that all these attributes were clearly captured on the map.
