When I maximize the window it does.
When I restore, it sets left upper corner at the right place, but window size remains in maximized size and cannot be changed after that.
Version 0.51 or 0.52pre1 the same.
IceWM as Windowmanager.

evilvte supports several different layout.
It is quite difficult to correctly handle window resizing for all those layouts.
Other VTE-based terminal emulators also suffered strange window-resizing-bugs in some specific window managers.

I think you may try lilyterm [1], its maintainer is also an icewm user.
Or you may try build evilvte with GTK+ 3.x, it behaves differently with GTK+ 2.x.

I do want to fix this window-resizing bug, but with a very low priority (because it is not bugging me :-P).
