(On main) closing the active window sometimes leaves nothing focussed #3786

Not sure what the trigger is (yet) but I've closed apps a couple of times today (latest was Ctrl-D in the terminal) and been left without any window having focus. Also Alt-tab doesn't bring focus anywhere - clicking with a mouse does.

Trying to reproduce immediately gives the expected behaviour, not the error

I think this might be the culprit: #3698, though alt-tabbing should work

Similar to #3808 - probably the same cause

Can you try reverting the changes done in #3698? I can't think of anything else we touched recently that might be causing this.
