Could auto-open generated file as a quick temporary solution

Do you already have a plan which library to use to render the PDF? Ghostscript or PyMuPDF, I guess?

I haven't looked in to it too much, but I was leaning towards PyMuPDF as being a bit more lightweight (unverified). Since layer modifications can take a while I'm hesitant to do the auto-open workaround, so I was thinking of maybe just doing a layout assistant for the page tiling that has page numbers rather than actually rendering the pages. However, you are certainly welcome to experiment.
