Toggling labels

Sorry to add yet another issue so short after the last, but it's one thing that haunts me for some time now. Is there a way to achieve a user-controlled labelling, toggling it on/off, that does not involve creating a Group Layer with one layer for the symbols and another without symbology and only label?

That's our workaround at the moment, but it triples the number of layers (counting the group lyer too), and it is not intuitive for many users.

Especially since information density is so different from region to region, it make very little sense for us to predefine labelling based on zoom factor in the first place.

@Wernazuma I've got an initial attempt at a labeling widget. It basically creates an empty layer with only labels that a user selects from a dropdown. @roemhildtg We're giving it a try in a copy of our editor. Looks good for a long time, but ultimately doesn't label. We keep getting an error , maybe one of those still existing bugs you mention. Anyway, please keep me updated, this seems to be really useful for us, probably not for all layers, but for the "aggregated data" ones, where I can imagine people would want to use different values as labels and there's no need to label more than one of them.
