How would you imagine end-users would come into contact with this work? Are there applications which could use these results in their project?

Who do you expect to run instances of Commune? Would an organisation run its own Commune for its own chatrooms? How would they set this up?

We plan to market Commune to any open source project that is currently using Discord for their chat community.

Our earliest adopters will likely be fediverse communities, where Discord+Matrix bridging is already commonplace. See for example the .world communities, Beehaw or programming.dev.

There’s also a strong anti-Discord sentiment in general on the fediverse, because it’s recognized as unnecessarily proprietary and closed down APIs & clients for what ought to be a collection of standardized protocols for cross-apps interop.

The primary value-add of Commune is web-readable logs and linkable threads for public-facing channels, along with a seamless Discord-integration that won't require external tooling configuration.
