Let's investigate supporting https://github.com/containers/krunvm on MacOS at least. It'd be especially ideal to share Go code for interacting with krunvm with Podman-machine.

Do you mean krunvm or krunkit? I don't think podman machine has any krunvm code. It has some form of krunkit interaction code since krunkit and vkfit share the same cmd line interface.
