Reopening Shops, Restaurants and Other Small Businesses

You have been retained by the NYC Department of Small Business Services to help in the activation of communities through the support of local businesses. To date by some counts, nearly ⅓ of small businesses have closed in New York and many may never reopen. In order to help encourage the reopening and/or the continued operation of small businesses, which can include shops, restaurants or both, you will develop a comprehensive strategic plan that proposes new solutions to this challenging problem. You can choose to focus on one type of business, a specific favorite shop/restaurant or a specific community shopping street in need.

What are the challenges and constraints of safely reopening or operating these businesses in order to help support the city’s small business ecosystem and their surrounding communities?

Using the tools of urban technology develop an approach to safely open these businesses. Tools can include data analytics, novel approaches to mobility, use of AI, IoT technologies, ICT, automation and computer vision.

You will be graded on the creativity and comprehensiveness of your approach and your innovative use of technology to support the safe reopening of this important economic and social system.

Additional credit will be given for ideas on how to create a more resilient business plan to protect these businesses in the case of future pandemics

As part of this project, you will develop a brief group presentation that includes the following minimum requirements;

Analysis

Identify the impacts of small business closures on other urban systems and the surrounding community.

What are the challenges for safely reopening these businesses?

Proposal

Identify goals of reopening your selected business and define metrics of success.

Develop Solutions to the challenge leveraging the tools of urban technology
