Describe the bug

Currently the Apps do not allow renewal or certificated besides for the highest-order certificate (that of the last vaccination). This is based on the valid assumption that the last certificate contains the total doses admissioned as information and thus implies that it certifies all doses. Mind-boggling as it is however, not all governments/administrations are this intelligent. Japan requires for entry that all certificates are valid otherwise entry is denied.

Steps to reproduce the issue

  1. Have a valid certificate of highest order while also older certificates that have run out of validity.
  2. No button or option for certificate renewal is displayed/offered

Expected behaviour

App should allow renewal of certs of previous vaccinations too. A warning might be displayed that this is not required by countries of the EU and only third countries might require older certificates when entering.

Current workaround

  1. Make copy of all still valid certificates
  2. Delete highest order certificate
  3. Renew the certificate of the previous vaccine (that now appears as highest order)
  4. Readd deleted certificates

Possible Fix

Implement expected behaviour

@sirati

Thanks for sharing this use-case! It seems that the Japanese authorities want to be able to check which vaccines were used in the previous vaccinations.

"Es wird empfohlen, auch Nachweise über die 1. und 2. Impfung mit sich zu führen (einzelne Zertifikate oder gelber WHO Impfausweis), da bei der Einreise seitens der Quarantänebeamten Fragen zu den erhaltenen Impfstoffen gestellt werden könnten."

According to the notes from the Japanese embassy it would be possible to prove this using the yellow vaccination booklet as well. In any case you already identified the workaround of temporarily deleting newer certificates. Note that you can also recover deleted certificates from the Recycle Bin on the main screen. You don't need to scan them in again.

I have encountered problems with being allowed to board an airplane that did not originate from within the EU.
While the Japanese embassy in Germany might be able to make recommendations that will be followed by local ground staff, unfortunately the original text does not include any such provisions. So it is still a problem

Sorry if there was any misunderstanding. I was not suggesting to close this issue. You identified the problem well.

This issue is now obsolete with the ramp-down of test centers.

I don't see how this obsoletes the need to be able to present valid certificates to foreign institutions

"Those who are entering Japan on or after May 8, 2023, will not be required to present a valid vaccination certificate or pre-departure inspection certificate.
Registration via Visit Japan Web will remain necessary even after May 7, 2023!"

This issue is now finally obsolete. Certificate renewal is no longer available since yesterday.
