Currently, both text color and background color are overridden leading to loss of syntax highlighting over the inactive region. Would it be possible to keep syntax highlighting and just override the background color of that region?

Semantic highlighting won't be available since that code is not indexed, but it should be possible to not override the foreground color. The feature was modeled on how normal VS does it.
