I totally get why a Number field would default to zero when you save it, but it doesn't really make sense for it to be pre-set to zero when creating a new entry.

It's peculiar that I need to delete the existing value before I can enter in the new value. I can't think of any other fields which exhibit that behavior.

I've just released a small plugin for a nullnumber field type. It works exactly the same way as the built-in Number field type, but has a default value of null rather than zero.

Just realized this FR would dovetail nicely with this other FR: #927

Leave the field blank naturally, and allow people to specify 0 as the default number if they really want it.
