Hi Dave,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Not too sure with the terminology - But yes the Open Street Map/Open Cycle Map tiles.
The system maps (the Microsoft/Nokia ones) are no good for cycling and once you loose a data connection which happens out on trails if mountain biking it makes it pretty hard to use the app. Could there be a facility to cache a subset at preset zoom levels?

Anyone know if this has been done before on any of the other platforms?

We'd love to do this but it's against the terms of service of the upstream providers unless a not-insignificant fee is paid for. However, there might be a development on this soon - will let you know the tileserver URL if so.

This is now permitted for the OpenCycleMap tile layer. The other layers are not possible.

However, the OpenCycleMap provider asks (very reasonably) that efforts are made on the app to avoid downloading tiles that are not likely to be used, i.e. to make sure that they are near the route, rather than just a massive rectangular block. This avoids pointless CPU and bandwidth, and of course means that the app grabs the tiles quicker and without using too much space up on the device / memory card.
