Open separate window for media

I'd really like the option to open the full view of media in a separate window when clicked on, instead of opening inside a popup/modal within the current window. As per my other issue where I explained my usage case as a single column-width window, currently when I try to view media in full it often only displays at the same size as the thumbnail, but in a modal.
