core library updates for named arguments anywhere

There are no necessary core library code updates. The change enables new ways to do the same thing, but there is no urge to change existing code to use the new feature.

We may want to check our documentation, and see if some would read better using named arguments earlier in the argument list. It's not expected to be common.
