Sensorlogger reads sensor data and creates statistical reports in logbook tables. It can redistribute incoming sensor values, but also statistical summary data, to multiple MQTT brokers or to a HomeMatic CCU. Its original purpose was to serve as a logger for a weather station equipped with Tinkerforge sensors, where data has to be averaged and logged every 15 minutes. However, Sensorlogger is very flexible and can be configured to serve many other purposes.
Supported data sources are (selected) Tinkerforge sensors and JSON structures that can be read via HTTP(s) or from local files. Additionally, you can subscribe to topics that are broadcast by MQTT brokers and read the values of system variables from a HomeMatic CCU. The values received via MQTT may also be embedded in their own JSON structures.
In the following listing you see a very simple example for a logbook file. It keeps track of the mean outside temperature and humidity every 30 minutes.

Sensorlogger is able to read values from Tinkerforge sensors and JSON structures in user-defined time intervals. After reading, these values can be forwarded immediately to MQTT brokers or to a HomeMatic CCU (the XML-API is used to set system variables using their ISE-ID). The values are also stored internally until they become irrelevant for any further statistical analysis.
Data can also be received via interrupts, for example from Tinkerforge IO bricklets or via subscriptions to MQTT topics.
Optionally, collected data can undergo statistical processing. Currently, Sensorlogger can calculate mean, median, sum, minimum, maximum, frequencies, counts and standard deviations. These are calculated for logbook columns that users can set up to their own liking in the configuration file. The statistical summary of a measurement cycle is then periodically written to a logbook file and/or broadcast to the MQTT brokers or a HomeMatic CCU.
A system with support for 64 bit integer datatypes (C++ uint64_t
) must be used. Usually, this is also the case for 32 bit architectures such as the Raspberry Pi or the Tinkerforge Red Brick. If 64 bit integers are not supported, Sensorlogger will show undefined behavior, because UNIX time stamps are processed with millisecond resolution.
Known software requirements for Linux:
- C++17 compiler, such as GCC 7 or higher
- For the MQTT option: Paho MQTT C and C++ libraries (and their dependencies)
- For the HTTP option: Libcurl and its C++ developer tools
The software can be compiled with support for several libraries or interfaces. You can decide which ones you need. The first lines in the makefile

If your Sensorlogger must connect to a HomeMatic CCU or if you want to load JSON information from the internet, you need to compile with support for libcurl
. Make sure that it is installed:

offers different implementations. All of them should work, I have tested:

If you need support for MQTT, the Paho MQTT libraries for C and C++ must be installed. You can get packages for Arch-based distributions for the AUR: paho-mqtt-c-git and paho-mqtt-cpp-git. For Debian-based systems (e.g. Raspberry Pi, Tinkerforge Red Brick) we have to compile and install the libraries on our own. To do this, we need to make sure that we already have all the required packages installed:

We now use git to download the Eclipse Paho MQTT C library, and compile and install it according to its documentation:

The necessary source code for the Tinkerforge C/C++ bindings is already included, no extra steps need to be followed if you want to compile with Tinkerforge support.

To run Sensorlogger, you can pass the path to a configuration file:

If you don’t provide the path to a configuration file, Sensorlogger will look for one under the name sensorlogger.json in its current working directory. If it doesn’t find one, it will quit.
It is recommended to run Sensorlogger with restricted privileges. The setup procedure for an automatic startup at boot time depends on the distribution. For Debian/Raspbian, I use a service file for systemd like the one shown below. It assumes that the executable file named sensorlogger
is located in the user’s home directory at /home/username
. The configuration file called config.json
is also located there in this example.

The file sensorlogger_config_example.json contains a complete example configuration. Any Sensorlogger configuration file must be a JSON structure. It can contain the following sections, but not all of them are required.
general
is meant for general settings and remarks (you can add your own). Currently, it only specifies the global event log file for errors and warnings.tinkerforge
contains the parameters for the connection to the Brick Daemon.mqtt
contains the parameters for connections to MQTT brokers.homematic
contains the parameters for the connection to the XML-API of a HomeMatic CCU.sensors

Generally, a configuration file must only contain the parameters and sections that you actually need. Irrelevant parameters can be omitted; if necessary, their standard values will be used. The standard values are presented in descriptions in the following sections.
Hint: you can use Firefox to open JSON files and make their tree structure visible. This can help you understand how JSON files work, and any errors in your file will be shown.
In this repository, you can find an example configuration in the file sensorlogger_config_example.json. This file describes the following scenario:
- An outside weather station has two Tinkerforge sensors: one for temperature, another one for wind. A Temperature Bricklet is used for the temperature measurement. The wind anemometer is connected to an IO Bricklet at channel 0 and Sensorlogger is used to count digital events (whenever a low state is reached).
- In the living room we have a different temperature sensor that sends its measurements to an MQTT broker. Sensorlogger subscribes to its topic. Additionally, there is a HomeMatic humidity sensor in the living room. Sensorlogger reads its datapoint values every two minutes via the XML-API from the HomeMatic CCU.
- The solar generator is monitored by another application and its current state is reported in a local JSON file. The value for the currently produced electric power is read by Sensorlogger from its configured key sequence in the JSON tree.
- Two logbooks are defined: one for the weather station and another one for the house. The weather logbook contains one line every five minutes. In two columns, it contains the mean temperature for the last 15 minutes and the wind anemometer’s rotation frequency for the last five minutes (which is the logbook’s cycle time). The logbook for the house contains two columns for the mean living room temperature and humidity of the last 15 minutes (again, the cycle time) and two more columns for the mean and maximum electric power produced during the past 60 minutes.
- Both the current sensor values as well as the statistical results for the logbook columns are sent to the MQTT broker using their own topics, as well as to the HomeMatic CCU using the ISE IDs for special system variables.

You can set up a connection to a HomeMatic CCU to read numerical data points and to set system variables. This way, sensor values from other sources can be sent to the CCU right after the measurement or after the statistical analysis. The communication is handled via the XML-API, which must be installed as an add-on for the HomeMatic CCU.
To get an overview of the available data points for your CCU and their respective ISE-ID, you can access statelist.cgi
which the XML-API provides. Sensorlogger can read such data points using queries to state.cgi?datapoint_id=...
, and it can set the values of system variables using statechange.cgi
.

Any statistical evaluation of the collected data is bound to a logbook column. If you want to get the results from a statistical operation, you have to configure a logbook column. It doesn’t matter if the logbook is only virtual or imaginary and you are only interested in broadcasting your statistics via MQTT, or if the logbook will actually be written as a real file.
As a file, logbooks are tab-separated text files where the collected values from the most recent measurement cycle are statistically summarized and recorded. You can set up an arbitrary number of logbooks, each with their own variety of columns for different statistical operations, sensors and cycle times. A very simple example of the content of a logbook file is shown below. It collects the 30 minute mean values for two different sensors.

It specifies the size of the confidence interval around the median value μ in units of the standard deviation σ (RMSD around the median). This means that with this parameter, a factor f can be set such that all values in the interval μ±(f·σ) are considered for the statistical operation.Note that outliers can significantly increase the standard deviation σ, depending on the total number of measurements. This means that the factor f should not be chosen too high to avoid including outliers in the confidence interval. But f should also not be too low in order to avoid elimination of too many values.
In certain cases it can happen that this outlier reduction technique eliminates all values, e.g. when the confidence interval is too narrow. In this case, the only representative for the measurement cycle is the original median value of the collected data points. This would not necessarily have a bad effect on averaging, but it strongly affects sums, minimums, maximums and standard deviations.
To get a better feeling of what is happening here, you can set up a second column with no confidence interval applied, or another column where the actual standard deviation of all measurements is listed to see some typical values for your use case.
