Open Question: how flexible or prescriptive should we be for data extraction?

There's a couple of areas where flexibility in where data is extracted from would be useful:

There's already precedent of using jsonpath in areas of the code. Perhaps we could allow users to specify where data is kept?

I certainly don't want us to suffer button syndrome, and make a billion knobs to turn.

A discussion about how prescriptive or flexible we should be about collecting data is warranted.
