Phase 1 Project Selection Status Report
Name: Dorian Peake
College: St John's College
User Identifier: dp448
Director of Studies: Malte Schwarzkopf
Please complete 1, 2 and 3 below.
1. Please write 100 words on your current project ideas.
Currently the implementation of Ocaml allows concurrent programming; however due to the lack of a parallel garbage collector, a global runtime lock is in place resulting in little potential for multicore processing. Ocaml-Java is a very nice project which solves this problem by compiling Ocaml code to Java bytecode, thus utilizing Java's own garbage collector and parallel processing capabilities - however the Ocaml-Java concurrency library is quite low-level for frequent use. For my project, I plan to port a very popular concurrency library - Ocsigen's Lightweight Threads (LWT) - to go on top of Ocaml-Java's low-level concurrency library. This way software written with LWT may utilize full multicore capabilities when compiled using Ocaml-Java and thus really demonstrate the benefit of multicore support. The benefit being that software written in LWT under Ocaml-Java should be far more scalable than its normal Ocaml counterpart. This can be measured using various parallel benchmarks.
2. Please list names of potential project supervisors.
Jeremy Yallop ( jdy22 )
Leo White ( lpw25 )
3. Is there any chance that your project will involve any
computing resources other than the Computing Service’s MCS
and software that is already installed there, for example:
your own machine, machines in College, special peripherals,
imported software packages, special hardware, network access,
substantial extra disc space on the MCS.
If so indicate below what, and what it is needed for.
- My own Machines:
Macbook Air 13" 2013 ( 8GB RAM, 512GB Storage, OSX/Windows 8 )
Desktop Computer ( Ubuntu 13.04/Windows 7, Intel Core2 Quad, 5TB Storage )
- Machines in College
- 'Roo' Multicore Machine ( 48-cores )
