Did you find a solution to this issue. I am also using Kayak on VmWare with Ubuntu 18.04 and i face the same issue.

Ran into this same issue: Fixed by isntalling openjdk8, and following the other issue with Maven on the issues section here. How do downgrade to openjdk8: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1133216/downgrading-java-11-to-java-8 |

When I try to start Kayak I get
WARNING: An illegal reflective access operation has occurred

WARNING: All illegal access operations will be denied in a future release
This is on Ubuntu 18.04LTS running on VBOX. works fine when I install it on a native install of Ubuntu.
