As discussed here, it seems like this repo is dead and it would be best to use either HiveMQ MQTT Client or pahu.mqtt.android by hannesa2.

Personally I think HiveMQ is the way to go, it's a more modern client. I have integrated it successfully into one of my applications that I was rebuilding at the time. I wish I could share that code but it's for the company I work for
