Let the user select multiple objects and then select options to either align them, or to distribute them evenly.
Before using these commands, the user has to adjust the view parallel to a plane (x-y, y-z, x-z).
(In other words, he should select from front/back/left/right/top/bottom view).
The options can be as follows:

(These controls are actually from a 2D software like PowerPoint/Impress or InkScape, but they will still work in Blender, because the 3rd dimension is supposed to be ignored.)
