Using 3.1.0, I am unable to filter by _index. I've also tried changing the configuration to point to my unique index name rather than using _all

Did you enable it? http://www.elasticsearch.org/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/mapping-index-field.html It is disabled by default.

I figured it was enabled since _index is showing up as a field in my documents. I'll dig deeper though and confirm. Thanks for the lead :)
As mentioned, _index is not indexed by default.
When I read that, it sounds funny, but its true!
