Kibana navigation change will plan to happen in 7.8 . We need to decide whether we go ahead with reordering the Kibana apps during the navigation changes. Reordering the apps in Kibana is part of the Time to Visualize project and will emphasize dashboard new improved experience.

As part of Time to Visualize the team is coupling dashboard and Visualize experience into dashboard app so there are fewer reasons to go to Visualize or jump back and forth between Visualize and Dashboard. The new experience will provide a better experience to create, add, and edit panels in dashboards.

Originally the changes we wanted to make as part of Time to Visualize include:

  1. Visualize name is changed to Visualization library
  2. The dashboard app will be moved to be the first application. New order: Dashboard, Discover, Canvas, Maps, Machine learning, Graph, Visualization library.
  3. Visualize app will be moved to the bottom inside the Kibana section

7.8 is a big milestone in Time to Visualize project as well as a time when Kibana goes through greater navigation change. I suggest we will do item 2 and item 3 changes in 7.8:
2. The dashboard app will be moved to be the first application. New order: Dashboard, Discover, Canvas, Maps, Machine learning, Graph, Visualization library.
3. Visualize app will be moved to the bottom inside the Kibana section

After the change, the new order would be

  • Dashboard
  • Discover
  • Canvas
  • Maps
  • Machine Learning
  • Graph
  • Visualize

Why now?

  • Though it is not mandatory to attach the change we plan with Dashboard to the new kibana navigation, it is better to make this change along with a bigger change Kibana already does instead of introducing two minors where we have navigation changes.

Assumption:
We are currently still working on 7.8. Assuming we will complete the tasks for 7.8 we want to go ahead with the navigation change. The 7.8 flow

@myasonik @ryankeairns I think we may have to re-open this and backport a fix to 7.8, it looks like Canvas is the top line item right now in master.
